Grandfather and Grandmother

Sometime after staying in Phuket, we travelled to Koh Samui. We stayed near Lamai Beach, so decided to take a visit to the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks. Take a quick guess at how they got their names.

One of the biggest attractions on Koh Samui are the Grandfather and Grandmother Rocks on Lamai beach. We were staying on the east side of the island near the beach, so we had to check them out.

We started at the north side of the beach and walked the length of it. We could see the rocks in the distance the whole time, our goal for the day.

When we got to the end of the beach, we found that we couldn’t go straight to the rocks without climbing over some difficult granite formations. You have to go back to the main road and walk down a small street. Of course, there are shops here hoping for some custom from tourists.

The rocks themselves are free for anyone to access. On seeing the rocks, it became obvious how they got their names. They are said to resemble male and female genitalia. They are said to have formed after someone’s grandparents washed up onto the shore, and stand as a memorial to their pure intentions.

After seeing the rocks we went to get a drink at the nearby Rock Bar. It’s a chill place to rest, with a nice view and a reggae soundtrack. You can also buy weed to smoke here if you want.
