Introducing Dorthon

Gameplay Note
All out-of-character comments will appear in a box like this to distinguish it from the in-character voice I will use to write the Let’s Play. Everything outside of this box will be written using the voice of the character.

At the suggestion of my father I have decided to keep a diary. Perhaps one day it will serve as a tale of my many adventures. More likely it will chronicle my studies and chores in the Keep. I guess I will start by introducing myself: I am Dorthon, a Dwarf raised in the citadel of Candlekeep.

Candlekeep is an unusual place for a dwarf to grow up. My father died before I was born, and my mother died giving birth to me. The sage Gorion took me in as his own, and brought me back to the Keep where he has raised me ever since.

My father encouraged me to study dwarf history and culture, and made the effort to introduce me to any dwarf visitors to the Keep. To this day I work as an errand boy, learning by helping. It is through these experiences I was able to become a Volamtar, a priest dedicated to Marthammor Duin.

In following his teachings, I also got curious enough to occasionally break into places I don’t belong. You never know what hidden secrets you can find in the books they keep under lock and key.

Gameplay Note
Dorthon is a Cleric/Thief that uses the Volamtar kit instead of the default Cleric class. I picked his race and class randomly, but decided that I wanted a dwarven deity for him to worship. Marthammer Duin seemed to be the closest fit, so I used EE Keeper to give him this kit.

As a blazer of trails I am granted a natural ability to sense my surroundings.

Gameplay Note
This spell basically reveals the map if you are outdoors.

I am also skilled in the art of tracking. Imoen hated playing Hide and Seek with me growing up.

The Finder-of-Trails grants me several spells to use on a day-to-day basis. I should

Gameplay Note
This is basically free magical ammo. I might spam this when I get an archer in my party.

Gameplay Note
This is a good spell to give a low-level tank a quick boost.

Gameplay Note
Less useful due to the daily clairvoyance, but it could help to reveal enemies, and can also be used to boost a familiar/summoned creature’s attack as long as they count as an animal.

Gameplay Note
This can provide significant protection from damage at higher levels.

Gameplay Note
A decent bonus when you’re relying on physical attacks to damage opponents.

Gameplay Note
No roll to hit so can be free damage against enemies who aren’t strong against magic.

Gameplay Note
I’ll be casting this one a lot at the beginning of the game.

Gameplay Note
If I build to melee this can give a nice boost to damage for a few rounds.

Gameplay Note
I’ve never really seen the point of this spell. Perhaps it’s useful for detecting intentions if you roleplay?

Gameplay Note
Dorthon is also a thief and will probably rely on thief skills to detect traps instead.

Gameplay Note
Keep those wolves and bears at bay!

Gameplay Note
Can detect more alignments than Detect Evil. I guess this spell can be used to determine if other alignment-based spells can be used on them.

Gameplay Note
A ranged attack with no roll to hit. It can be nice to have some guaranteed damage against low-level enemies but this probably won’t be useful at higher levels.

Gameplay Note
This spell seems useless when we have both aid that gives extra hit points, and bless that affects multiple people. It does have the advantage of a longer duration, however. Also it could stack with aid and bless to give a total of +3 to attack and damage rolls.

Gameplay Note
A good way to combat enemy spellcasters.

Gameplay Note
This is an important spell for fighting summoned demons at higher levels.

Gameplay Note
This can also prevent poison, so could be worth casting before engaging those giant spiders.

Gameplay Note
Holy damage and blindness? Good for buttering up tanks at the start of a combat.

Gameplay Note
I have a mod that only allows us to sleep once per day, so this may be more useful than it appears.

Today, Gorion has uncharacteristically interrupted my chores. He hurriedly gave me whatever gold he had on me and told me to prepare for a long journey. I am excited at my first chance to finally travel and explore! Still there is something in Gorion’s demeanour that troubles me. I take stock of what I have:

All I have on me is my quarterstaff. It can be used as a weapon, but it is more of a walking stick.

If I am to travel I am perhaps better to have a real weapon. It’s time for a journey to Feldepost’s Inn.
