v6.0.0: The Villager Release

It’s a New Year so it’s a new version of the mod. This week I’ve finally released version 6 of Bok’s Banging Butterflies. Now everyone can play with the new features I’ve been working on for the last several months.

As well as a bunch of bug fixes, there’s a slew of new features to discover in this new version. The theme for this version was Villagers, so many of the new features are related to this. Let’s take a quick look at some of the new things I’ve added since version 5.0.0.

New Species

I’ve added two new butterfly species and 3 new moth species. I’m aiming to slowly grow the roster of butterflies, as it gives players some new goals each time they update the mod.

The Green Skirt Baron butterfly is based on a real butterfly I saw on the Monk’s Trail in Chiang Mai. Identifying it was difficult, but with the help of the reddit community I was able to figure out what species it was. There is little information online about this species, which is reflected in the description you’ll find in-game.

The Christmas Butterfly is in part based on the real-life swallowtail native to Kenya, but it also holds a special present for players that keep it around for the festive season.

The Case Bearing Clothes Moth and Oak Silk Moth are two new varieties of moth. One is a new tiny moth, providing a little more variety on moth sizes, while the other is a bright moth that can be harvested for silk.

In Cambodia I saw the deceptive Hummingbird Moth for the first time. It had such a unique look and behaviour that I couldn’t help adding this amazing moth to the mod.

Butterfly Feeder

The new Butterfly Feeder block is a tool to automate butterfly breeding, at least temporarily. It can be filled with flowers, apples, or watermelon slices, and butterflies/moths will automatically eat from it. This will allow them to mate again and lay more eggs. It can only hold one stack, however, so you’ll still have to top them up from time to time.

Lepidopterist

The Lepidopterist is a new villager profession that will provide trades related to butterflies. It can be a way to obtain rarer butterflies, as well as a means to sell butterfly items you don’t need. You can find these villager hanging out in their new homes with all the other villagers.

In addition, Wandering Traders will now offer butterfly related trades, though their offerings won’t be as desirable as experienced lepidopterists.

Cosmetic Items

Three new butterfly based items have been added that can give your builds some butterfly related flair. A new banner pattern can be created with silk and paper. It works like any other banner pattern and can even be applied to shields!

Butterfly origami is an ancient art form, and now you can create it in Minecraft. These can be placed in any orientation and can be used to decorate your builds.

Finally, there is a new pottery sherd that can be used to create pots with a butterfly pattern. These can be discovered through archeology, just as with other sherds.

中文

One day I woke up to find someone had made a pull request to my project. It was from @Andypsl8, another developer who had translated everything into Chinese. So if you happen to be 中国人 you can enjoy Bok’s Banging Butterflies in your native language!

Version 7.0.0

There is still one major bug in the game. Thanks to D3V1LKITTEN on CurseForge, I’m aware that crafting the Butterfly Book is a bit funky and doesn’t interact well with other UI/Interface mods. I know how I’m going to fix it, but it is essentially an entirely new feature so I decided to release the mod update first since it’s been a while. I’ll implement this new feature next and release it as a mini-update when it’s done.

After that I’m finally going to start working on the features that originally inspired this entire mod. It was a spark of an idea, almost a joke, that’s taken me on this crazy development journey and ended up with me learning more about butterflies than I ever thought I would.

But now it’s time to start doing what I wanted to do in the first place. Because some butterflies aren’t good for the world. Some will take away everything that makes you who you are.
