There’s a sci-fi franchise with a huge following that desperately wants a revival. Many are looking for a new TV series, or a movie. But I always feel if they do this it will end up being a reboot not as good as the original. But I think there’s a better way to expand this franchise.
Stargate
Stargate is a TV series about a group of soldiers protecting the planet from aliens. They use a Stargate to go on missions on other planets, where they fight aliens, recover alien technology, and use that technology to research and develop new hybrid weapons to fight the aliens. They also have to impress the governments at home to maintain funding, and establish new bases on other planets.
X-Com
X-Com is a video game about a group of soldiers protecting the planet from aliens. They fly around the planet, going on missions where they fight aliens, recover alien technology, and use that technology to research and develop new hybrid weapons to fight the aliens. They also have to impress the various governments of Earth to maintain funding, and establish new bases.
Why?
How has anyone not done this yet? There are bags upon bags of money to be made here.
A version of X-Com set in the Stargate universe is the perfect way to expand the Stargate franchise. All the gameplay elements are already in place – even establishing bases on new planets could be a mechanic to replace the building extra bases on Earth. Stargate has two alpha sites during its run.
The expansions write themselves. A sequel featuring the Ori, an Atlantis DLC set in the Pegasus galaxy. Imagine fighting Jaffa, Goa’uld, Replicators, and the Wraith using SG teams in an X-Com style game.
Seriously game developers. Get on it.
